The Rhine Gorge, known as Ruinaulta in Romansh, is a 400-meter-deep and 13-kilometer-long gorge. It was formed by a major landslide from Flims around 9500 years ago. Since 1977, the Rhine Gorge has been listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of national importance (BLN).

The landslide affected an area between Ilanz and Reichenau, creating a lake. Over time, the waters of the Vorderrhein gradually carved their way through the rock and earth masses.

Numerous small peninsulas, called "Islas," emerged. They were partly used as pastures and fields, and settlements were established in the Middle Ages. One of these Islas is Bargaus, where we have passionately created an oasis of relaxation, namely Ustria Bargaus, fishing ponds, and vegetable crops.
